leave dishes on the table
have a kip
and wait to go
there are moments then
pressed tight between cushions
well guarded
by mismatched sheets
on old settees
footprints of family
that tell stories
you only see
if you stop looking
and listen

and then ..before you know it
he's in the car with the engine running
and you say goodbye and hope that they understand..
and know they do
because all his life they've seen him do this
