In regard to the matter of my meeting Miss Kate,
I have to admit I was terribly, horribly late.
She waited impatiently on the step of the stoop,
Next to a pot of her famous stone soup.
With her hands on her hips,
and a frown on her lips,
She asked “Where have you been?”
I felt my face flush
And I felt my face blush
and answered with heartfelt chagrin.
“I went to the meadow to find you some flowers.
I meant to brief, but minutes flew by into hours.
You see, a butterfly I met there
told of a magical, secret place where
there were twig dinners, leaf bread, and dandelion pies
And bouquets of flowers pretty as Mary Kate's eyes
But as just as he spoke,
the wind blew,
the butterfly flew,
And I was left standing without any clue,
Of how to find where those magical flowers grew!”
“So please forgive my grievious, mischievious crime
My intentions were good, I simply ran out of time!
Over hill and over dale have I trooped
To have just one bowl of your famous stone soup.
“It’s probably burned, scalded and sour.
By now you’re late by almost half an hour.
But if we don’t eat it, I must throw it out
And that would be wasteful and untasteful, no doubt.
So pull up your chair,
I have napkins right there,
But only one spoon which we can share.”
And so at long last
With afternoon almost past,
We sat on the stoop and had Mary Kate’s
Nutricious,
delicious,
world famous stone soup.
Author notes
A recollection of my daughter's first cooking experiment. Hope you can enjoy it for what it is, a happy reminder, a celebration of my daughter and her innocent early delights in life.
Can you relate if you don't have a daughter?

Totally enjoyable!
Oh, I loved this. It made me close my eyes and skip away to the meadow where butterfies said 'hello', and magical food grew up hill and down dale. Made me want to sit with Mary Kate and sip some of that delicious soup!

Short and Sweet
A short fairy tale of a poem, with a story behind it. Flows as well stone soup (that's meant to be a compliment!). Unfortunately I am unable to relate not having a daughter, but I think there are other relatable situations in the story. -
Wonderful!
How like a boy (man) in love, especially a poet. I like the allusion to stone soup too. it fits with the faery food the boy was looking for in the meadow.
I also love how it tells the story of the childs first cooking adventure.

Thats sweet! I think it's cute that you wrote about your daughters first cooking ^^
I loved how it flowed, I have a hard time doing that.
It was cute! ^^
