Introduction to Reality

I was introduced to reality last night
upon walking through your door,
I saw you in a whole new light
as you staggered across the floor.

Your speech slurred, your eyes glazed,
alone you could barely stand,
and though you were completely dazed,
the glass never left your hand.

I looked at you and remembered back
to a time when I felt more than I do.
When love blinded me to the facts
and I just wanted to be with you.

So I joined you in the party game
I was in love, after all.
But every night was exactly the same
and revolved around alcohol.

It caused you to say things not meant,
things that you could never take back.
My heart grasped onto the messages sent
Unbeknownst to the honesty they lacked.

For the words you spoke were never yours
but the alcohol speaking for you.
One day we finally closed the doors,
something I knew we had to do.

I struggled with emotions and had to choose
to move on and deal with the pain.
Not realizing then I had nothing to lose,
and everything to gain.

In time I found somebody new,
the one I'd been searching for.
He's shown me what true love can do
and I could not ask for more.

You and I have remained good friends,
beyond all the lies and the fights.
And though I'll always care for you
I was introduced to reality last night.
