On tip toes along the edge of the Earth,
Water’s clutches holding me by the chin,
Arms motion professed swimming expertise,
Talented five year old actress convinced.
In new pool while playing lost footing,
Bobbed up, down, up, down up, like a cork,
Limbs splayed in panic each time went under,
Mothers stood unmoved thinking prankster joked.
At last, delivered from death’s liquid arms,
Gallons of water escaped choking child,
Water’s face seen as evil from then on,
Grim Reaper’s fluid house of death waiting

Memory of almost drowning at birthday party for five year olds in swimming pool. I was pretending I could swim and must have been convincing as mothers at party let me go under for some time before pulling me out.

spooky stuff at 5. i did not learn to swim until i was 12 at boy scout camp, and then only out of sheer pride not wanting to be tag as a non-swimmer by all my chlorine loving friends. funny now as my youngest two are competitive swimmers and i've spent more hours at pools officiating swim meets than i can count.
well done.
