between the worlds
growing thinner
beginning to unfurl
The Witching Hour
The Witching Moon
drawing closer
coming soon
Bay of hounds
Fogs on Moors
hissing cats
creaking doors
Spirits wander
hear them shout
just rewards
what they're about
When this mortal coil
begins to wane
comes the advent
Of Samhain
Author notes
Hey There, When I was in High School, we had an exchange student from OZ. She was blown away at how into Halloween we are here in Michigan. Many of the old gods travelled to the new world, as with many things, we Americans took it and made it our own. If you want to know the "true" meaning of and origins of Halloween, I suggest looking up Samhain, this is the principle "god" figure that it was held for throughout much of Europe until they (The Church) began to hunt down and commit genocide upon our people. Pagans that is...
Peace and hope it works for the contest, 20 lines exactly.

I love the opening line
"Diaphanous curtain
between the worlds
growing thinner"
Its so descriptive.
And then the ending
"When this mortal coil
begins to wane
comes the advent
Of Samhain" -

Thanks much for the read and comment. I was shooting for the old myth view of the time period, from whence it all came sort of thing.

very nice write. im glad there are people who recognize some of the old gods and their transition into modern day culture. as for this contest though, i though one of the rules was no religion? samhain is the wiccan sabbot, and in your AN you refranced Pagan. just pointing this out.

I would not say that my mention of Samhain qualifies as a religious reference. Halloween is descended from the Festival of Samhain, simple historical fact. This predates Wagnerian Wicca by several centuries. The poem references the ancient beliefs to show the why of Halloween more than the ancient or current religious significance of the season.
Pagan seems to be that sort of catch all umbrella, sort of like Protestant represents so many splinter sects of Christianity. I am not Wiccan, I am Pagan.

This is a really good poem. I like our version of Halloween a lot....oftentimes forgetting what the origins are for real I think that happens with most holidays, though. lol. "Fogs on the moors". I like that image.

Thanks for the read and comment. Most of our current holidays stem from Pagan tradition. They predate Christianity and were adopted to gain popularity amongst the faithful and give them an out besides being destroyed because god loves them so.

I love the flow & rhyme scheme of this! I also loved how in the notes you give a little description of what "Halloween" really is. I'm def. gunna checkout Samhain on google to see where my favorite holiday really stems from!
Great write, thanks for sharing!

You are welcome, and thanks for the read and comment. Spoiler Alert!! I am a real life Pagan, nearly all of our festivals and rites have been taken over by the "Church"
The list is huge.
