Every day at work
at around six,
and eight and ten,
I go outside and have a cigarette.
The Ten O'Clock cigarette is always my favorite.
It's just me,
and my book,
and my cancer.
This week I'm reading a memoir
about a man
and his truck.
And I feel some connection to this man,
having a crappy truck of my own.
I read,
and I smoke,
and I laugh with this man,
I get to know him.
And I get to know me.
Because believe it or not,
you learn a lot about yourself
when looking at other people.

love this enough that it makes me want to start smoking! Hahah not really, but it is great. Love the last stanza!

I agree with this completely...my favourite books are memoirs because of the fact I learn a lot looking into others. I enjoy non-fiction to begin with but I find looking into other people deeply like that we realize our similarities are raw and differences minute. well put.

ahhhh. simple but true. i like that you just wrote it down. and yes, we do learn alot about ourselves when looking at other people, but we learn even more about ourselves with how we react to them. nicely done
