what are words but
mere sounds and symbols
created by the elite
for the rest of the
selected world to
attempt to use correctly
and what are symbols
but nothing without someone there
without a poet
to string them together
in the hope that
someone might understand it
dearly beloved
we are gathered here today
to mourn the death
of lady art
gone are her followers
who devoted their lives
to the written word
gone are her lovers
creating art for beauty
and not for awards
technological advances
were meant to make it easier
for her word to rule the world
instead we are sitting here
listening to the last of her followers
all wanting to win that prize
and lose their soul in the process
so we bow our heads down in prayer
as we rest lady art again
ashes to ashes
lust to dust
true art to true god
as we say rest in peace
in pieces
in those fragments of lost poetry
forever and ever
a fucking men

i performed this in the finals of my first poetry competition. i came fourth. and considering i typed this from memory... i'm pretty proud of it hehehe.
