Hermes Teazle Baby

Renewed hobby, keeping hermit crabs;
tracking sand across my floor, in my sink -
never really coming out at day but always
having a rave-up at night, knocking about.

Not enough sand, they keep you up,
bonking against everything and chittering
away; too much sand, and it gets everywhere.
But darling little things, so playful -

Even if they do look a bit like spiders,
walking across you hands as you hold them.
One thing I've learned is to leave a sleeping
crab lie - they pinch you if you try to wake them;

A bit like tarantualas, really, but with all the
charm of two bug eyes peeping out of a shell...
something endearing about the little buggers;
I don't know why.

Author notes

I forgot how addicting they were to have!

    I love how you appreciate all living creatures. I never had a hermit crab as a pet, but I like them. You give such a good, endearing description of them. I learned a lot from it! Don't they eventually grow out of their shells and move to new and bigger ones?

    Oh and I also get to care for a rose hair tarantula. I got to hold it (something I've wanted to do for a year or so now) and it was actually amazing! I want to get one. I remember being afraid of spiders when I was little but they are actually quite beautiful.

    Aw, cute! I get to play with them at work now as they're kept in the reptile section I look after. We have "fancy" ones in silly shells with faces even. Though I almost feel embarassed for them... How many do you have?

    And how has life been for you!?! I have been so busy... I hope life is treating you well. New pets are always awesome. I'm planning on getting a blue and gold macaw next year. I made the space for a cage.

      I've seen the fancy ones - can't bring myself to buy one, the poor things! I've got two, Hermes (Teazle) and Baby. They were supposed to be my nephews' birthday presents, but their mom said not right now so I'm looking after them. Hermes is definitely crabby - he's pinched me twice and the last time he wouldn't let go of my hand I had to run him under running water to get him to let go. I'm fine, still looking for a job and working around the house. Took me and mom about 3 hours to repair the basement toilet tonight, even with an universal kit. We had to get rid of the birds because my asthma came back and was getting worse, so we gave them to a good home. I've always wanted a canary, but I don't suppose that will ever happen.

    They are and rather clean too...I had them for my children and I was about to get one for my grandson who is 4 now, but at the age of 2 he received turtles for pets, now that he has a baby brother they had to be given to a closest friend and is being promised to try those cute little buggers soon, as something simpler to take care of. I like catching the ones on the beach then of course releasing them. Not seen a lot but it is fascinating. I think you are even the only one to write about this kind of pet. Delightful and excellent. Blessings.
