seven hundred and forty two days,
she has held in each urgent urge to return; to relapse.
she shuffles around in her tattered smiles.
(i can tell exactly how this is going to end)
breaking her winning streak, i watch as she slides her
polka dot flip flops off by the banister
"flip flops? it's snowing." i casually mention. she sets her pink backpack down to the floor. dark circles swallow her eyes; a mark of no slumber.
our eyes connect...she was so strong..for so long...; but was now pushed off of the cliff,
that she has been clinging to, for 742 days.
she shuffles slowly to the bathroom after dawning her brown slippers,
and i rifle through her purse, finding a small bag of white powder, a syringe, and a lighter tucked neatly in to a half smoked carton of cigarettes.
tears...choke my face. my knees buckle.
the world, blinded to her radiance, blinded by her intelliect and beauty.
that she resorts to track marks and failed drug tests.
i rip the pack open and dump it down the drain, flushing it with running water. she shreiks...she yells..she pounds her feet on the floor. I look at her, with her syringe, lighter, and a pack of smokes. she turns on the ball of her heel, and heads up the stairs to sit on the roof and smoke and ponder.
her anger, fuming.
but i take the anger with a smile.
at least she can be clean for 743 days tomorrow, and i wont need to spend my night wondering
if tomorrow ill wake up, with one less friend.

Beautifully written...
742 days... a little over 2 years. That's good. That's really good. Awesome job. :]

Seven hundred forty-two days. That's a long time. I'm glad you caught her before the act. Maybe having it was just a way of letting herself know that she could beat it. I hope everything works out.

Thank you! She is quite the lady. And is finally content with life, and I'm glad her moment of weakness was ONLY that. Thanks for the comment!

Not all men are stupid. I wish this didn't happen to her
she didn't deserve anything like this. I hope we both don't end up waking up with one less friend. Nice job on the poem.
