Beneath the city wall there lay a well
Which, through the years, was lost to disrepair
‘Til all the tales its waters used to tell
Had faded, like a sea mist on the air.
An age ago, in time betrayed by word,
When lovers met beneath the city walls,
There was a pair for whom the lines were blurred –
A Romeo and Juliet, in thrall.
These two were circumspect, and took great care
To meet in secret, once a lonely while
And slowly, as a staid and weary pair,
Grew tired of the constant fearful guile.
Within a crumbling, ancient stone-walled well
A ring has lain, and ever shall it dwell.

Wow, a rhyming poem in this contest that actually has a steady syllable count and pretty good flow. Thank you for not embarrassing the art of rhyme. I like this.
