His eyes are a waterhole for tears

`

"If you cannot be a poet, be the poem."
David Carradine

i.

I saw him standing near
a newly born river.

He is the survivor of the aftermath,
and the river its child.

ii.

He is cornered
by devastation
while holding tears
in his waterhole eyes.

iii.

The water is now the half-laden
skin of the cemetery --
a sanctified land
for the soul-less bodies,
of our loved ones,
of his loved one.

iv.

He is carrying
a sack not of rice
but of bones
of his wife.

He is carrying
a sack not of ordinary love
but of till death do us part.

`

Author notes

I saw this man in television. He is not a poet but at that moment, he is a poem.

I love this. I can see why Heather gave it gold. Good job.

  • Oh god, this brought tears to my eyes and sent shivers up my spine! The last line hit home with a tangible punch and I lost my breath in its wake... wonderfully sad and moving.

Amazing piece penned on such a sorrowful topic and well-deserving of the gold.

Ahhh, I remember this one and meant to comment on it when we were in the previous contest together. I'm glad you brought it back to my attention, Hensley. This is a great response to the given prompt. I remember watching David Carradine in a lot of movies and television shows over the years. I think he would be most pleased with you for this one, Grasshopper. Thank you for entering it in my contest. Good luck, Poet.

Hey, I read that quote of the day and I was like WHATEVER, as iffff I am going to be a poem, lol. Now it all makes sense.

Jesus fuck, everytime I read that ending I get goosebumps, and I have read it many times. I'm speechless. This is a masterpiece - I have to bookmark it.

""If you cannot be a poet, be the poem."
    David Carradine"

i love this quote... and i love this poem, very emotive.

[in the title, is should be 'are', also, "but of bones
of her wife - should be 'his' wife]]

The man in the video by the way was a survivor of the flood in Zambales. Che che Lazaro is doing the interview and I am speechless with what he has done considering that the effect of the typhoon is really depressing.

I must say, love is love.
