Road Poem #1

We hit the rode and we kept going west
Couldn’t shake the feeling of dread off of my chest,
My heart beat in double-time with your hand on my knee
But they say if you love someone, you need to set them free
So let me go
I guess if I don’t tell you, how would you ever know
That I’m in prison here
This car is my holding cell,
And I’m struggling to steer,
So let me go.

Sun dropped out of view like jewelry down a drain
You kept talking about “us, long term” as it began to rain
Tuned you out as best I could and gripped the wheel real tight
As the two people I hate the most sped on into the night
that’s you and me
I’ve got half a mind to crash us into the nearest tree
But I am trapped in here
This car like our relationship
too out of control to steer
this thing’s on auto.

Please tell me what you think
