very few of us live in reality
never wish to see the truth
that will, could eventually set us free
in the end we'll wake up to find
a place unworthy to live upon
blood flows where water once did
as the fish float to the surface
with the smell of decay fresh in the air
gone is the sun
darkness covers the earth
dead and the dying surround
yet so far you stand
not proud but still alive
while everyone around you dies
their cries fill your ears
run as fast and far as you can
you won't escape it
they'll haunt you even in your sleep
so as you close you eyes against the darkness
of the world that surrounds you today
the cries of those who suffered and died
may they keep you warm
as you try not to die tonight
Author notes
Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.

A very eerie yet fitting take on the quote. Your poem reminds me of the book of Revelation in the bible. I think you did justice to Poe's words. I hope that you do well in the contest.

well done
good take on the prompt
like these lines..
you won't escape it
they'll haunt you even in your sleep
so as you close you eyes against the darkness
of the world that surrounds you today
the cries of those who suffered and died
may they keep you warm
as you try not to die tonight
good luck to you in the contest
thanks for the share
