After-Dinner Delights. – another Non-Entry.

For ‘afters’ at the royal table we serve those guests who still are able
to resist a visit to the sewers, with coffee, cheeseboard and liqueurs.
We offer Cognac (Freres Douro) with Benedictine or Cointreau 
while those who like the taste of whisky may well prefer Prince Charles’ Drambuie
Kahlua and Tia Maria team up well with Baileys Irish Cream
Sambuca, Sabra, Curacao are all liqueurs that most will know.
I could of course list many more: Grand Marnier, Parfait Amour,
Chartreuse, Campari, Anisette, the list can run to hundreds yet.

A lot of gentlemen are taught to settle for a glass of Port.
Ruby or Tawny, either pleases in company with finest cheeses.
I was going to index them in time but there’s no way cheese names will rhyme
and, so the best ones don’t get missed, below this poem, I’ll write a list*
If you want to serve the very best, Parmigiano tops the rest.
It’s also known as Parmesan and is the best cheese made by man.
Most cheeses need some biscuit backers. We serve them sliced with thin rice crackers
but any biscuits, any shapes will do - and don’t forget some grapes.

Most British Huguenauties would prefer a cuppa tea,
the favoured drink in almost every British colony.
At Huguelot, for our Canadian and US friends,
we serve a range of coffees which includes exotic blends:
Brazilian, Colombian, Vietnamese or Indonesian,
Arabian, Ethiopian, African or South American,
Whichever coffee you’re addicted to, we’ve got the lot,
even if you ask for Indian, we can brew you up a pot.

With liqueur and cheese, coffees or teas, the greatest treat by far,
is relaxing after dinner with a Davidoff cigar.

I’ve written this to cheer myself because I’m feeling blue;
the reason being that for two weeks I’ve had this awful ‘flu.
If meter isn’t quite correct and some lines don’t scan well,
I couldn’t give a tinker’s damn (Cough! Cough!) Oh, What the hell?

    Dear Hugh,

    So sorry that you're feeling blue. You chose an excellent remedy (so typical of you). I can imagine having dinner with you. I eat slowly so it's hard to converse and chew at the same time. I wouldn't have to say a word and I know I'd have a good time! You know so much about so many things and you know how to make everything interesting!

    Here's a line from one of my favorite movies "As Good As It Gets": Jack Nicholson says to Helen Hunt...."You make me want to be a better man." When I read your poems, you make me want to be a better poet (even when you're not feeling well). Your poetry is "as good as it gets"!

    Are you feeling better now? I hope so.

    There's some mighty fine alcohol listed there, Hugh... and some it goes quite well with chocolate as well as all the other accompniments you've mentioned

    Geez, you certainly have a great list of alcohol, chocolates and cheese.
    Not being much of a chocolate or alcohol user makes it hard to recognize a lot of them.
    I'm still trying to work out what to write for the contest.
    A wonderful poem my dear friend and get better quickly.

    Dear Hugh

    Your list of booze from which to choose, is really something grand.
    I have some Port and Whisky but the rest – you understand,
    Is way beyond my taste buds and what’s more beyond my purse,
    And if I could afford them it might well become a curse.
    I love a nice strong Stilton, Gorganzola has more bite
    (You shouldn’t eat too much of it, especially late at night)
    Varieties in plenty so that all tastes they will suit
    With tasty savoury crackers, and of course some juicy fruit.
    It’s nearly 6am for me another’s days begun
    While over in New Zealand you can watch the setting sun.
    I know it’s way too early and I really should resist
    But thoughts of cheese fill up my mind and simply won’t desist.
    I know we have no crackers but there’s cheddar – that will do
    If it gives me indigestion I shall blame it all on you.

    I’m sorry that you have a cold and germs are lingering on
    But I warned you on your keyboard they grow fast and they grow strong.
    Those antiseptic wipes are good, I freely them espouse
    And while you’re wiping off the keys please don’t forget the mouse.

    Sorry to hear you still aren't well but the Castle spread you described is certainly swell.

    I'll have a taste of each and even join you out on the veranda for a cigar, when you're recovered, of course.

    Get well wishes from pixiestishes. Pretend you didn't notice I slurred my name, I might have had a wee bit more than a taste of the Grand Marnier. lol
