Granny's Chocolate Gravy

~~~~
Granny churned the butter by hand
in an old gallon jar
while the biscuits warmed in the oven
and you could smell the chocolate
boiling in the milk and sugar
It was her Granny treat
she made only for her babies
home for the holidays
and we lay on our pallets
in layers of quilts and old feather mattresses
snug in the warmth of the big wood stove
stoking the morning with its hot breath
of oak and creosote
The air was warm and creamy thick
with our anticipation
for that sweet holiday treat
that only a Granny could make
Author notes
Actually I had three Granny's who would make it for me
    This is in the right category, soul food indeed. The nourishing, nurturing nature of Granny is poured into poetry for posterity. The aroma's and the ambience are all enveloping and imbue a tender sense of feeling replete.
    Lovely!
    This is a delectable memory, Sweetie. My mama would make homemade hot chocolate when it turned cool, but no one ever made me chocolate gravy. Perhaps they realized how dangerous that could become, considerin'. My best friend did make me sausage with red gravy, though (in Louisiana). It was awfully tasty. Good luck in Jin's contest, my Friend. Wander Lea
    • I think it must be a regional thing coz I've never met anyone outside of the Ozarks who has ever even heard of chocolate gravy ... what a tragedy for ya-all!
      Thanks Hon
