Into daylight.
It breaks my heart
to watch,
but I can only help her
with these frail prayers
and greet her
when she crosses
back to us.
It breaks my heart
to watch,
but I can only help her
with these frail prayers
and greet her
when she crosses
back to us.
Author notes
Ali is still fighting her coma, showing small signs that she is trying to return. Tonight she squeezed her father's hand and released it on command. It isn't an easy bridge to build.

My mom wants me to tell you "baby steps"...and when you greet her when she crosses back (all the way back), we know you will be there with open arms.
This poem really touches me, for so many reasons. I know how much she means to you.

Glad to hear she is making progress, even small steps are steps. My prayers are with Ali and all your family.

I am not sure what is happening in your "real life" -- I can comment on this piece, however.
It is very moving. Your economy of words lends a sense of immediacy to this reader -- that, and emotion, too. You pack a wallop
On a personal note, I hope that this is NOT happening in "real life" for you. In case it is, my thoughts are with you and those you love.

What a hard vigil this must be, but I'm glad to hear she's still fighting. Succinct
sorrow at it's finest Scott.

My mother was in a coma for a week in 1986. I kept talking to her, quietly, about the things that meant the most to her. Everyone thought I was nuts for doing it. Nevertheless, she finally came out of it...and repeated things I'd said to her. It does make a difference. Alexandra is obviously quite strong. Prayers do matter.
