What Little Boys Want

Daddy, daddy, will you play knights and dragons with me?
You be the king and I’ll be your knight who slays them all!
Not now, son, perhaps when I have more time and am free.
Now run along, I have errands to run and people to call.

He walked away sad
So I bought my little lad
A set of dragons and knights
Of dazzling colors and bright lights

Daddy, daddy, will you play aliens and space ships with me?
You be the captain and I’ll be your valiant, loyal crew!
Not now, son, perhaps when I have more time and am free.
Now run along, I have places to go and important things to do.

He walked away sad
So I bought my little lad
A set of aliens and ships to fly
To sail the the darkened sky

Daddy, daddy will you play Indians and cowboys with me?
You be the sheriff and I'll be your gun slinging deputy !
Not now, son, perhaps when I have more time and am free.
Now run along, your daddy is obligated to do his work duty.

He walked away sad
I realized what I had
So I set aside my plans
A picked up a set of crayons

Daddy, daddy will you play again with me, I had so much fun, yesterday?
I said, go ahead and pick out one of your toys that I had bought!
I'm sorry, daddy, yesterday I threw all of them away.
It was then I know what my boy wanted could not be bought.

He walked with me content
I realized what I had nearly spent
I had almost lost my little lad
I thank God for what I had

This truly is a poem that fits the prompt. I think it's just beautiful and penned perfectly. This poem is so true and it makes the reader wonder why kids understand love better than adults.

    Love,
    Amera♥

Thanks Amera. You are far too kind with you comments, but I do appreciate your affirmation. These words are the cry of my heart. Parents so need to spend time with their kids!
