Nothing

I looked at the vast emptiness around me waiting for something…waiting for anything to happen.  Nothing did.  I walked a little further hoping somebody else survived and I wasn’t the only one left.  I guess I should have known this would happen someday, I just didn’t know it would be so soon.

With all the dead bodies surrounding me, I tried to take a relaxing stroll along the beach, as if nothing had happened.  As if lightening didn’t strike whole towns setting them on fire, killing everyone…as if animals of all sorts and sizes hadn’t rampaged the cities attacking everything that stood in their way…as if giant waves hadn’t swallowed half the world with just one bite...as if I wasn’t the only one left.

The waters and sky calmed down after they finished their unspeakable mission to kill every soul on earth, except for me, like they had had specific orders not to touch me in any harmful way or else they would be punished.  The thunder roared one last time in the distance and the waves pushed one last broken shell onto the beach before everything was completely still.  Normally I would have rejoiced to have this quiet time to be by myself, but right now I was praying the lightening would strike one last time taking me just like it had all my loved ones.  Nothing happened.

My mother always said, “When God closes a door, he will always unlocks a window, even if you have to push a little to get it open.”  I was desperately looking for my window, but I saw no way out.  I was to be trapped on earth, alone, forever because my window was jammed.

By now, I walked the whole perimeter of the city and it is official, I am the last alive human being left here. I smashed the window of a nearby car, a Volvo, assuming the owner wouldn’t mind, and drove from major town to town, city to city, and finally coast to coast, looking for some form of life, besides cockroaches. I found no one.

It had been almost a month and I finally got out of the car, for a reason besides stealing another one or eating, and lied down in the middle of the street and closed my eyes and tried to die.

    “Hello?” I heard someone say.

I snapped my eyes open but didn’t move. Surely I was just delusional.  I was just going crazy from loneliness and trauma. I closed my eyes again, not caring if I was becoming schizophrenic.  The voices, even if they weren’t real, could keep me company.

“Is anyone still alive?” He said again.

“I am! Over here!” I stood up so fast I got lightheaded. I waved around frantically not knowing where he was.

I turned to see a boy about my age fifty feet away and I ran towards him.

“We’re all alone, aren’t we?” His voice cracked.

    “Yeah. So far.” I said.

He simply took my hand and we started walking towards the nothingness around us.

Author notes

My friend, Natalie, drew me a picture and I got bored one day and wrote this about it. I will post a link to the picture some time.

This was amazing. It was captivating, and enjoyable, even in bleakness. It was fan-tab-ulous... I would say Awesome-O-Possom... but that just makes me look dorky trying to tell you that your writing is amazing.

" It had been almost a month and I finally got out of the car, for a reason besides stealing another one or eating, and lied down in the middle of the street and closed my eyes and tried to die. "

That's my favourite, how someone who has all but given up...accepts their fear and wants to leave it all behind...at least that's how i see it.

Brilliant write, a few parts you could review but no real need great job!
