when did you first experiment with drugs?
my sister was graduating from high school. she went to a party at her best friends house. my mom wanted to go, so she made me drive her. my mom passed me my first joint. my mom poured my first shot.
i was fifteen.
would you say your mom is responsible?
no. my mom passed me the joint and she poured me the drink.
she did not force me to inhale or swallow.
how did the alcohol and pot turn into harder drugs?
when i was younger, i never wanted to eat. i would try to beat my previous record and go longer and longer without food. when i got stoned that night, it became my new obsession.
i want to go higher and faster and longer.
what does it feel like when you're on drugs?
it's unreal.
it's scary.
my heart races and my hands shake and everyone stares at me. meth makes my body intolerant to everything. so, i can't eat or drink or sleep, my stomach burns and my muscles ache.
coming down is worse.
if it's so bad, why do you do it?
i think i'm supposed to hurt.
when i was four, i sat beside my papa while he died.
when i was seven, i was dragged off the bed by my hair.
when i was nine, i watched my mom's skin bust and bruise.
when i was twelve, i helped clean up after the fire.
when i was sixteen, i spent the nights cutting myself.
when i was eighteen, i followed that fucking rabbit.
and i just can't find my way out.

Your idea for an "interview" was something I have never seen before, and therefore something that impressed me. I appreciated the way you presented your words- a strange combination of emotion, meaning, and matter-of-fact. Your answer to "if its so bad, why do you do it?" rang all too painfully true to me; I think it does with too many. Thank you for entering my contest.
