Burial as Sea....

The passing of our goldfish
brought tears to all our eyes
but came the problem of 'disposal'
once we'd all said our 'goodbyes'

To place it in the waste bin
would be such a big mistake
before long that fishy garbage
would the local cat's supper make.

i came to the conclusion
that in water a fish should be,
so flushed down the 'water closet'
and gave it a 'burial at sea'

Now as the years passed on slowly
new pets then caught their eye
not wanting goldfish in a tank,
it was a hamster I had to buy

but two years on came that day
when hammy took his final breath
lying curled and stiff inside his bed
the hamster looked peaceful in death.

once again burial plans were made,
and just dropped him down the loo
the handle pushed, the water flushed
but hammy stayed afloat, in view.

I grabbed the brush and poked him down
pulled the handle and flushed once more
he just floated there inside the bowl
as I collapsed exhausted on the floor

now thinking of what I had done
I couldnt bare the thought,
of sitting there in an hours time,
oh the blush that thought it brought.

of poor old hammy popping up,
as something just popped down,
it's then I knew my big mistake,
furry balls you just can't drown

grabbing the sodden furry body
wrapped it in tissue from the roll
then once again with brush in hand
I stuffed it down the 'bowl'

Flush and flush and flush again,
I closed my eyes, afraid to view
it vanishing around the bend
at the bottom of the 'loo'

At last the thing had disappeared
i breathed and squealed with glee
realising that you cannot give

a hamster a common 'burial at sea'

I can't decide whether to keep on laughing or grab a hankie and cry, Ann. I could NEVER get away with something like this with my kids, though. I tried but they always insisted on a proper burial with markers and flowers. It's a good thing we had a big back yard.

    Good one, Sis

Super superb and a real laugh! This was beautifully executed...No, I shouldn't say that! Your humorous pieces are a marvel to behold and ones that should break the surface more regularly. No...I shouldn't have said that either! Excellently written with a great ending....no....Oh well, it all comes down to the same thing. Thanks for the laugh, I really needed it tonight.

Now I know this is just a fairy tale - or should that be 'furry tale' ? The vision of him coming up to meet his doom was too much - I had to laugh. Thanks for the smiles this morning Ann. xx Von

Having owned many pets, death always raises its ugly head when you least expect to deal with their end. The time at a party for two, and the fish in the aquarium practice swimming upside down or your puppy so cute to you decides now is the time to raise his leg and misbehave, but why did have to be your date's purse.

I read your tale of trail and tribulation and all the problems related. I laughed so hard about the bobbing hamster and your choice of ceremonial covering that my tears almost caused a short in my keyboard. Wonderful rendition of the road to perdition.

    Peace & Light,
    Tom B.

Hey animal rights defending poet: thank you!

For attracting our attention to the picture "of poor old hammy popping up", and give us the merit of understanding its feelings "as something just popped down"!
We knew at once that you tell the reader "it's then I knew my big mistake," while you escaped from every mistake against the animal friends of mankind...
    Applause!

OMG! ROFL! Ann! This is freakin hilarious Part of me feels bad for laughing and the other part is just in hysterics. I've not laughed so hard it ages. You must have some industrial cammodes in the UK 'cause if you tried that in the states you'd get a stuffed up pipe and a flash flood Wonderfully written and so darn creative! Bravo!

What a struggle... You penned it beautifully...

I should remember this for future reference, just in case...

Keep on penning with ink that never fade
