Life Imitates Art

At the end of the movie
Kathy Bates is talking to her husband
The camera holds on him
As he reaches into his pocket
And turns his hearing aid down.
The sound track fades to silence
And the screen to black.

My girl friend gets up
And goes into the bathroom.
She leaves the door open
So I start talking to her about the movie.

I can hear here use the toilet
I can hear her brush her teeth.
I can hear the bathroom fan whirring
As I continue my
Erudite dissection
Of the movie.

When she is done
And returns to the bedroom
I realize she hasn’t heard
A word I have said.
She gets in
Turns out the light
And settles into
The silence of her life
As I turn over and settle into
The silence of mine.

There are times that I know my husband's not listening, and I oddly, don't mind. I've told him sometimes I just need a sounding board, and vice versa. A nod is nice though. lol.
I get this, and liked it.

you know even when we listen, we hear more of our own words - interpretations, responses, or just things like 'i'm hungry' or 'is there milk in the refrigerator'?

i like this for all the insights hidden behind the everyday images and words.
