Mid late October, first cool spell
Isolation of layers, shivers
Winds from the north squeezing fits of rain
Stealing secrets with my hat
Ancient wool fedora
Once brown, now mostly green patina
The new color of my eyes
My father's eyes compromised in resurrection
With back of mind longing
Hat chased into Sweet Olive glowing
I bury my face in the blossoms
Gulping, savoring, nuzzling aroma
Woodsmoke teasing edible sweetness
Wet, lush, shiny green leaves
blushing in celebration
Neighborhood decorated for Halloween
Arched black cats, hay bales, pumpkins
Skeletons and ghosts hanging in trees
Cobwebs of loss, silent faux tombstones
Shake off the rain , unwrap
Tea and cake so rarely offered
Leftover from birthday party
Contented client on planted patio
Safe from sheets of Loblolly dripping
Comfort of a relative stranger
For hooks in heart
Memories I promised to forget
But I break my promises
To myself

Love it!
You are so talented. I love you, Ben. You are a wonderful man. Hmm, and handsome too! Thank you for being you. Memories are a wonderful thing. -
This piece allowed me a glimpse of life through your eyes, how rich and full it is, the sweet memories as well as the sad. This is one of my favorites of all your poems.

sometimes memories are hard to forget, obviously..lol, also, promises we make to ourselves are sometimes the easiest that are broken. i really like this - it was different. thanks for entering.

Good writing on this page, Scribe...but the background was a bit too frivolous for such remarkable words, in my humble opinion.
Good luck in the contest.

Beautiful and visual.
Something which I came to expect of your poetry: tactile and rich in sound and in metaphor, gathering memories as gifts to share.
