Kairos

Everyone has their own "elephant in the room",
and mine had finally been lifted from my chest.

Though the tears flowed freely
I felt hands and hearts console me.
And though the words never seemed to fully develope
it was like we all shared a moment of telepathy.
From within my rib cage my burdens were set free
like one giant exhale that had been searching to escape.

Our ears were opened to finally hear
the sounds of the damned
the songs of the tortured
and the cries of the traumatized.

We wept with greif and we wept with joy,
and there was an unmistakable elation in all of our eyes.

For seventeen years some of us had never known family,
and in a mere four days we had formed one of our own.

Boys sat around strumming their guitars
and singing sweet melodies full of emotion and pride,
while the girls joined in, harmonizing perfectly,
and it went on into the darkness of the nights and the dawning of the days.

Shouts of laughter could be heard by every young child
and so could their sobs in between,
as we sat around a candle in a pitch black room filled with almost strangers
and told the stories we had been afriad to tell.

We all felt everything at once and at the same time,
waves of emotion cleansing our souls,
because our hearts had been opened to each other-
to the people who were right there in front of us all along.

Author notes

I feel that I need to explain...

Kairos means "The Lord's time" or "The eternal now". A retreat at my school is named Kairos. It was probably the most profound experience of my life. I cannot tell you what went on there because it would only cheapen the experience- telling what happened out of context would make no sense. To put it simply, and in the words of our slogan, "Nobody has it all together, but together we have it all"

This is beautifully written. It bears the semblance of a song, and also has the same quality as certain Biblical passages. I like the feelings you describe here, and your well-worded depictions. Your graphic is very appropriate for this write, as well. Very nicely done, and best wishes in the contest.
