A Divorce

For years, you appreciated the way
Some leaves would turn completely
Canary yellow before others even
Thought about it. If ever there was
A time to stop and take stock of your
Chances at dancing again, they were
Yesterday, but take what you can get,
Because by the afternoon rains
The early birds are too fat and full to even
Consider the thought of worms, who
Just wanted to come and see what all the noise was about.
There’s no window of opportunity too small
Or paneless that the promise of youth
Didn’t distort, like the rain that bends and
Swells and deforms the faces of the loving
Family on the other side as you, by now a
Yellowing canary, watch in on
As the cold water fills, stirs the well up,
And yeah, there’s a crack, there’s unruly
Sediment, sentiments like regret and the
Residue of lost love, but the rains promise to stay
For a while, not as an obligation but a constant choice,
A daily return, a chance to discover something
New in the old, to draw life from that inevitable death.
