My Heart Bleeds

I was at a loss for a moment,
the darkness around me
pierced into my whole body;
as numbness followed,
a question of “Where am I?”
formed inside my mind;
I was traveling so fast,
like a whirlwind in motion.

I opened my eyes
in sporadic blink,
adjusting their focus;
I felt my nerves frozen,
my feet, cold and wet;
I was shivering; befuddled,
why scattered belongings
were hovering ubiquitously.

With fear: In a soft voice,
I asked myself, “Where’s my son?”
Then whispered, “Errin… Errin?”
The silence of the night
was like an eerie stillness,
the hush kisses of the chill wind
enclosed my whole system; other than that,
no sound...no clatter. Only emptiness.

Suddenly, a flashlight flickered in front of me;
my youngest son, murmuring with concern:
“Mom, I heard you calling my name… “
Then, it dawned on me where I was:
On the sofa bed, where I slept wet.
The typhoon that hit without warning,
was like a dreadful nightmare.
My heart bleeds on the aftermath.

Author notes

This is a true story that happened last weekend, Saturday, September 26, 2009.
Typhoon “Ondoy” (Philippine name of the typhoon)or storm “Ketsana” hit our country with his fury, resulting to heavy damages and loss of properties as well as the death of the many Filipinos.

My youngest son and I experienced this catastrophe (though minor, compared to others) but the aftermath of this disaster is still a nightmare for all of us.

I was crying every time I watch the news. The people are suffering… homeless…starving…devastated… sick… and dying.

My heart bleeds for them, yet in times of need, I am so glad and very thankful to all my well-off countrymen and other foreign nations, giving their support to the Filipino people.

    I find this poem totally captivating as you relay the story and all its drama in vivid imagery. I can relate because we have hurricanes here in Florida and I have been through quite a few myself. Bravo!

    Love,

    Oh, Summer, you tell the story with drama,
    with emotion to tear at the heart. I feel
    the coldness, the strangeness as you awaken
    from the storm drenched couch. Your blessings
    hung over you adn you and your son are safe.
    Hoping the weather allows you to dry out
    totally. I [ray for you all will be closer to normal
    soon.

    This is a treasure of a piece, dear Summer.

    Love and hugs,

    Mumsy
