Tragic Eyes

I see the one fell truth
I can no longer help you
There are real limits with everything I do
And I cannot stand to feel you

I thought simplicity won here
Maybe the passion for waking
Would be all you needed
I was so wrong and I’m sorry
To think you’d see through to me
And see yourself coming to

I recognized your tragic eyes
I knew better in my insane little life
In my strange state of caring
I felt I’d be swallowed alive
(But first I must survive)

Ignore the desire to rescue
To burn through a past
I had no business delving into
But there is always room still to try
Once all is in unrest
There is no returning to light

I thought sufficiency won here
Maybe the reasons for waking
Would be all you needed
I was so wrong and I’m sorry
To think you’d see through to me
And see yourself coming to

I recognized your tragic eyes
I knew better in my insane little life
In my strange state of caring
I felt I’d be swallowed alive
(And first I will survive)

You are the anger the pain and despairing
Of what you’ve gone through and carried so far
But without one shred of willingness
I can’t see one way you’d ever build a real life in the end

I recognized your tragic eyes
I knew better in my insane little life
In my strange state of caring
I knew I’d be swallowed alive
(And so I did survive)

THIS IS FOR MY MUSICAL, BASED SOLEY ON A CHARACTER'S FICTITIONAL BACKGROUND, NOT ON REAL PEOPLE IN MY LIFE

I plan to revise this poem: please leave constructive criticism!
