Waves pounding against the shore
As the lady stands against the sea
Shades of grey paint her eyes
As she fades into eternity
A whisper in the darkness
Of a love lost so long ago
Footprints in the sand that lead to nowhere
Where she’s been we’ll never know
Rolling hills of green and silver
As the wind calls the lady home
Dancing in the mist she cries
Forever left to walk alone
Follow the rain to see her there
Standing betwixt and between
The lady in grey that hides in the tower
Waiting for what should have been
Maid of the mist the legend grows
Eyes the colour of stormy seas
Black hair flowing in the rain tossed wind
Lost within a memory
A single voice carries across the night
As all tremble at the sound
A song of rage and retribution
Of loss and a love that cannot be found
See no sorrow, hear no pain
As the lady in grey goes home again
A whisper in the darkness
(A shadow in the rain)
Warning those who love too much
(That tears are all in vain)
The waves still tell her story
As they roar against the cliffs
Every thunderclap says his name
Every lightning flash echoes his kiss
Tender weeping as the rain
Anger on the wind as she cries
As pale as the mist she walks within
Leaving only footprints trapped in time
Hear her calling, and hold on tight
The lady in grey, she walks tonight
Tender lovers, listen, beware
And prey that she won’t find you there
Heed her story, and hear it clear
‘Tis a lesson in anger that finds her here
Fear the fog as it will bring the rain
The maid of the mist, she walks again
See her sorrow, feel her pain
As the lady in grey walks free again
A whisper in the darkness
A shadow in the rain
Warning those who love too much
That tears are all in vain
For love is the sweetest poison
And she sings a chilling refrain
As her anger chokes you with its strength
The maid of the mist goes home again

Wow....I absolutely love this poem. Its solemn atmostphere makes the hairs on my arms stand up. I can see her being tortured by the love gone wrong. I really enjoy reading your poetry. An amazing write.

Powerfully Inspirational!!
A haunting portrayal of failed love, in a grey mix of the Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock, Edgar Allen Poe, and the depressed artist's vision (who painted The Lady of Shalott, what's his name)... as well as the legend of The Lady of The Lake. Just in time for Halloween. Reminds me of life - dark, dreary, hopelessly romantic, painful, all that. Anyway, this is briliant, and timeless. I hope you pick up a shiny cup in the contest!! Keep it flowing...
Peace,
Cyn
