Ambulance Ride

Entered in a wrestling match and thrown to the ground,
My neck almost broke in two with a cracking sound.

An ambulance was called my way and out came EMTs
With a loving hand they said to me "your care will be a breeze."

They asked me lots of questions and I asked them some too
I was scared about the hospital and just what they might do.

There was one question on his list that I will never forget
He looked at me and what he said was "When was your last cigarette?"

I looked at him astonished and tried to understand
Why he would ask a thirteen year old such a strange demand.

He cracked a gentle smile as he said to me
"That question is very common, it is simply policy."

I asked if he could turn the sirens on, but there was no need
As the road ahead was very clear and it was safe to proceed.

Driving down the highway, a needle they did produce
But as he stuck it in my arm, he gave me a brown stuffed moose.

As we got closer to the hospital our journey was almost done
Even though I was in reams of pain it sure was lots of fun!

Author notes

I was injured during the final match of a wrestling tournament when I was about thirteen. My injuries weren't serious and I was out of the hospital that night, but it was the first time I ever had to ride in an ambulance so it was a lot of fun. I still have the stuffed moose they gave me. It has the paramedic logo on his little white shirt.

Paramedics are really cool people, aren't they? I think they have to be because they have such a special and important job. I'm glad they made your ambulance ride fun and not too scary. Thanks for entering my contest! Nice rhyming! Good luck!
