Paradise Lost

Looking at the picture I fall under its dark spell,
Dizzy as a wave lifts me above the rocky reef,
Dumping me on the sand and I become unconscious,
Chirping birds and light from the breaking of dawn wake me.

Our Sail-Ship had smashed on the rocks in the coastal storm,
A fortnight back I had boarded the ship for the New World,
I was healthy and fit but the sea had broken me,
The stormy sea added a crushing blow to my vigor.

Endeavor to stand up straight but my stomach recoils,
Vomits and the smell of sea water fill’s my nostrils,
Cough and try to crawl with my elbows to the tree shade,
Sweat drops play with eye brows blurring visibility.

Thudding noise followed by running feet and noisy beats,
Forces me to lean and stand up against the tree trunk,
Just as a wild boar comes out of the green foliage,
Misses by inches and my weakening legs give way.

The noise turns inland probably following the Boar,
A man my age aims a wooden spear with a flint stone,
Right at my heart holding a coiled rope nicks me to heel,
I turn he puts his foot on my back to hold me down.

Takes both my arms to tightly tie them together,
Shaken I try to resist but he lifts me firmly,
Pushing me to move in front of him I walk in fear,
Sun at noon makes my skin wet with perspiration.

We tread with out respite and I long to quench my thirst,
Scattered huts keep popping up till he makes me stop,
I see a room size wooden cage with men and women,
He opens the door kicking me to enter the den.

I feel the human stench with raw animal power,
Wish from the heart to be free from this forsaken land,
I hear thunder and dark clouds appear with lightening,
The misty haze lifts, I see myself sitting at home.

Caloundra must have an ugly past locked in the reefs,
I would seek my future love paradise in deep space.
