What breaks your heart is ...
... seeing her lying pale-faced and weak in a bed
that had to be extended so that her long, slender legs
could stretch out fully. The wonders of technology
within these hospital walls.
... watching painfully as heart-wrenches gasps for
air tear achingly at thin shoulders. Vicious imagery
of bones ripping race through your mind and you long
to close your eyes; shielding yourself from such
torment. Another hacking cough sounds out and
nimble hands tie a swift knot behind your skull; holding
the oxygen mask firmly in place. At last, she breathes
a little easier.
... the future. Knowing time runs in circles, down a
winding street where not even the crystal ball can
foretell all that is to come. Distant ringing of bells
has you contemplating a life without her in it. The
angels are calling her home, perhaps. Who knows?
Not I.
... but it breaks my heart.
Author notes
I really need to become silver so I can put all my cancer poems in a list, and needn't continuously explain that they are all for my sister who was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2009 age 29.

Wow
I am very sorry that your sister has lung cancer. I have cervical cancer (It's not as life threatening) so I know what you're going through. Your poem is beautifully sad. It almost made me cry. I do hope that your sister is strong enough to fight for her life. Tell her to never give up. There are so many people who care about her, so many people who have gone through teh same thing and made it just because people chose to show that they realy cared. I may not know your sister, but I am with her. I will be praying for a safe recovery and speedy healing. Please tell her she's not alone.

interruptedangel19,
thank you very much indeed for reading, and leaving such an honest & lengthy comment behind; i appreciate that, and your prayers - for I do believe in the power of prayer, and am hoping that all these will indeed help her on the road to incovery. I know people say it all the time but she's one of the strongest people I've ever met and even all her nurses & oncology team say this about her too; she has that special 'light' apparently....
thanks again
