I sail out to capture.....

I sail out to capture the hearts
Of two young girls and
I mustn’t return without at least
A signed statement of affection.

They never hold their heads high
Or speak openly in an adult’s presence.
At times I wonder if they speak at all
But together they rule the world.

Here I come, a stranger to them
And sit down to engage in some
Coloring, crafts or anything
They have labeled ‘fun’ at the age six.

They don’t look up at me
Rather down on me, like I am one of them.
We communicate on their level and
And on their terms of approval

I am a pawn to them but still, they
Alter their ways to make me
A part of their safe circle and
I follow enthusiastically

Here they are two girls
Stealing my heart with their
Innocence and crushing it
With their ignorance,

I am no one to them.
They don’t openly show signs of affection
And they still hold their eyes to the ground
At our next unexpected encounter

Author notes

I wrote this poem about the cousins of my girlfriend. They are two very shy girls (twins) and it is likely that they have selective mutism.
They are never enthuasistic to see us, unless we engage in what they like and they can open up to you. But yet again the next time we meet, they pretend we are strangers until you give it your best.

Love D.L.
