All too familiar

Today she didn't speak
just squeezed my hand,
cried and shook her head
I don't understand

Today she sunk deeper
and I couldn't catch her,
today  was too late
I was too slow
to realize
what I needed to accomplish

Today I whispered
softly
she didn't hear
today I respected every fear

Today I quivered in her arms
the uneasiness felt too familiar
as I began to withdraw
reality came crashing down upon my shoulders..
