Conversation with a small turtle

She watched me
from the edge of the pond,
and I, sitting under the bow
of a flowers’ wreath, watched her.

I am not sure how and why
I thought it was female,
it was something gentle
in her moves and her eyes.

She was so... shy.

I said hallo and waved to her
and people watched me surprised
as if I was a bit out of my mind.
Or maybe a lot.
Who talks to animals
except kids?

Yet, nowadays so many people
talk to their own selves,
so why wouldn’t I talk to a turtle?

...and I am so sorry
that you weren’t here
to see her
before she pulled back her head
inside the dark, wet shell.

Danny and I often talk to the animals, as it seems those are the most worthy conversations to hold. Your ending was both simple and sad, my Friend. Good luck in the contest, Sweetie.

To talk to a turtle is really O.K.
Kneel down and look into its eyes
But watch what the words are that you have to say
So you'll know when the turtle replies!

Nicely atmospheric little poem. I talk to animals all the time: summary
Dogs - follow every word, and nod their heads. Try their best to comply with instructions.
Cats - understand every word you say, but deliberately do the reverse of what you ask them.
Crows - put their head on one side and nod wisely. Then go and tell the other crows that you are a soft touch. They then turn up and eat all your carrot seeds.
Fish - they do not have any ears. That is why you never see a haddock wearing spectacles.
Worms - I can never decide which end is which. I don't think the worm knows either.

I'll try talking to a turtle next time I see one. Meanwhile, have some applause.

    Sonja,

i love this, i love how it moved gently, and its gentle eyes. there is a mood in this i cannot explain, but i think you captured the slowness and the presence of it wonderfully here, i really enjoyed this one. different. i talk to animals too.

This is certainly different. I wasn't quite sure where you were going with this at the beginning, but the ending had me smiling knowingly. I would have liked to see see this expanded, like a part 2 maybe.

    Good luck in the contest.

PS. I talk to lots of things, including inanimate objects, so why wouldn't you talk to a turtle?

This is a beautiful piece. I talk to my animals all the time, especially when lonely. I got a melancholy yet slightly hopeful feeling from this piece.

    BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

This is something I always find myself doing, talking to animals! Many people do look at me kind of funny but the animals seem to sit still and listen a lot of the time. Just the other day I saw that big heron standing in the stream nearby and begin talking softly and it seemed he/she cocked their head just a little and was listening. Probably just to the sound of my voice but none the less they did not fly away. I always talk to the little bunnies I see on my walks and they are the ones who always stop and listen. Just speaking to them and seeing them sitting there brings to me such a feeling of peace.
