Gratitude

May I readily confess
that I am gratified
to still cheat the Reaper ?
To feel my heart swell
not just to see blue ocean
but to catch its surge within me.

Through senses dimmed
oh how I adore the swirl
of grass in wind-blown field,
the scurrying clouds of time,
the secrets told by murmuring beck.

Divorced from devious vanity,
no lust for wealth of others
who are poorer than I,
who have breadth of vision,
I smile at the edge of darkness.

My wild swans may not return
but I have absorbed their missive
that youth and beauty are fleeting
and that one small act of kindness
is more enduring than a thousand kisses.

Each morning sunrise is a defeat
for silent shadows that will smother
so I remain grateful always
for the sting of cold rain
the icy chill of winter:
they are my transient triumph.

I too went through a divorce and I am afraid that I had a very bad reaction to it

but one small act of kindness from another was worth a thousands kisses. and helped me get through it. good job and I wish that my experience was so uplifting as your poem suggests. good job.

" Divorced" was only a metaphor in this poem - it's simply about acceptance and gratitude for being alive and healthy. Tony

Such a simple statement made through such beautiful phrases.
I'm reminded of a man I once knew who answered the how are you question with, the sun's shining and I'm alive. To be anything but fantastic would be ungrateful.
I think more people should read this and realize that in the long run it doesn't matter and we should all just be happy to be around. Excellent poem as always

I feel I know exactly what you are saying here, when you're old and may die, it's always good to be grateful that you can still experience beauty for a little while longer, and who's to say what's important? No riches for me either.

Yes, you are right to do so! Beautiful images of spirit of place, for me, the tie to the earth. I love the allusion to the wild swans, and the affirmation of value in an act of kindness.
