All Worth it in the End

I can't count the times that people have said
After I told them, "I wonder how long
It'll take for him to hurt you." And I've never told
Any of them the truth of it.

Because everyone in life is going to hurt you
More than you thought you could ever stand.
The trick to a good life is not
To only love people who will not hurt you,
But to figure out which people are worth the pain.

If every hurt is healed by a kind word,
Or a minute that feels like eternity in his arms
Then he is worth it.

If you never quite forgive one or all of his wrongs,
And nothing he does could ever put his deeds right
Then he is not.

And so, whenever their voices take on that slightly
Patronising tone, as they tell me that I shouldn't bother,
That he'll hurt me in the end, and I'll regret everything,
I smile to myself, because I know that he has hurt me,
And that he will continue to, though I have rarely known him
To mean to. And I also know that everything
Will be worth it in the end, for

In his embrace, all troubles are erased.
