Why

Because once
  long ago
    the petals opened

Because now
  in the sun
    they're lying wilted

Because always
  in the drought
    they gasp for water

It hurts

Because once
  long ago
    it loved

Because now
    in the dark
      it searches

Because always
    in failure
      it hopes

(Because it's still alive)

Because still
  it can love
      again

Intriguing -- the poem is an answer to the title. Why have hope? Why love? Why believe? These are just a few of the questions that this poem can and does answer.

Why do we go on in any optimistic endeavor...because all those questions equal one thing, "hope."

    Beautifully done.

The prompt was 'why do we hurt like this?'... but in that question is wrapped up all the others you mentioned. Wow, you saw more in my poem than I thought anyone ever would... but then, you're awfully good at that.
      thanks so much!
