one 'simple' word.

a whispered truth that’s almost here.
a quiet youth that drowned her fears
in the one she presently fears the most;
i didn’t know we were that close
to the circle that could enclose her past.
how much longer will this question last,
dense in the air that froze them both
in the culmination of their age-old oath?

all who doubted them haunt her now.
they whisper their thoughts against this vow.
whether of cold or the echoing sounds,
he silently trembles as he kneels on the ground.

too young to predict what tomorrow will bring.
too young to be tied to the fate of this ring.
those three words are four now and waiting on one,
that rests on their love and cares not that they’re young.

a quiet love carried them this far.
a light in his eyes defines who they are.
in life, in death, in taxes, in you,
i am sure that my answer will carry us through
the silence that threatened us until now,
until one simple word completed our vow.
your smile rang louder than the passersby cheered,
uncertain, but firm—we are led not by fear.

Author notes

We've been talking about this for two years now with a smile. But now it may actually happen soon. And that's a beautifully frightening thought.
