Footsteps hitting hard concrete,
Dust flying from the footsteps.
Panting hard,
Huffing,
But nothing leaves the mouth.
Even though it is snowing.
The school building looks on in it's decay,
At the rusty chain fence rattles.
Footsteps tripping over broken pavement,
The church looking down at us from the hilltop.
The steel doors scream beneath dirty fingers,
As ashes rain from the sky.
Falling to the ground catching my breath,
We curl into balls and cover our heads,
Nothing but our panicked breathing and sweat.
..................
Then in the distance it roars up,
A great boombing sound from pole tops.
The siren rattles us down to our souls.
Close your eyes,
The darkness is coming.
