“To wonder is to begin to understand.”

Oh how busy it is, this mind of mine,
To ponder such pointless things as I do,
Worry over things I know will be fine-
How human, the fear of everything new.

Lack of understanding, where this fear stems,
And so to brood over the confusion
Is to seek meaning, and never condemns
Us to the madness that seems to beckon.

Yet time is passed, and seems to be wasted
On thoughts, and ideas, that amount to naught.
Sometimes fear life shall never be tasted
By those whose efforts are all spent on thought.

While it’s often been said throughout this land
“To wonder is to begin to understand.”

Author notes

This is an English (or Shakespearian) sonnet, and the first highly structured piece I have ever attempted (and completed =])

An English sonnet has a rhyming scheme abab cdcd efef gg
Each line has 10 syllables in an alternating stressed/unstressed rhythm pattern (the latter I don't think I very successfully achieved)
These poems present a conflict, usually with different point of view expressed in each paragraph, and then expresses the poets final resolve in the final couplet.

I hope you like it =]

Thankyou for the education, being an English man more than three times your years and still not having discovered what exactly an English sonnet was, I wonder at my lazeyness. Just as I was getting a little jaded on this site, up you popped and took me by surprise with your refreshing poem (and point of view)
''thoughts and idea's that amount to naught''. I do like that line.
and the verse just gets better after that.
    Regards David
