in the palm of her hand
a little girl knelt
where she could never stand
she tried to be brave
but despite how she tried
the tears just quit coming
no matter how hard she cried.
She prayed for her mommy
to come back home
So mad at the Lord
for leaving her alone
and though she knew Heaven
was close to her heart
it was farther than tomorrow
and it kept them apart.
A butterfly hovered
high in the tree
as the little girl sang
their favorite melody
lingering soundly
listening intent
a whisper of lovely
that only He could have sent.
He sent her the beauty
of color and grace
a divine piece of nature
from such a wondrous place
an angel of silence
that surpassed all great things
her mother, in spirit
wrapped into wings.
Attached to this wonder
of passion and love
was a bird, she had recognized
a white turtle dove
they sat side by side
on the branch of the oak
as she stared at them oddly
the turtle dove spoke.
It swooped down to sit
upon her tear stained sleeve
as it swooned in her ear
she begged it not to leave
the butterfly fluttered
through the beams of the sun
and that's when she knew
life's journey had just begun.
See her mother was with her
looking down from the sky
and this time she tried
but she couldn't help but cry
her tears were not sad
they were filled with such joy
now her faith, to this day
no one ever could destroy.
This was a moment
no other could understand
that God had come down
and taken her by the hand
showed her that love
was more than we could see
in the clouds, in the mountains
in the leaves on a tree.
It was on the wings of a dove
the sea soft and calm
the whistle of the wind
the eyes of her mom
she found her own heart
filled with laughter and love
and she owed it all to
that little white dove.
Author notes
I chose to use Lavender Butterfly as my inspiration and instead of using a poem, I decided to use her Story as inspiration as it is in poetic form.

She is an amazing writer! I kind of took the idea of picking someone and decided on someone I know, but have not had the pleasure of reading in a very long time and thus getting reacquainted with her work.
I remember reading her works and adding her as a friend a long time ago.. and I wish I had read more of her work and much more often. I hope I have more time to read her poetry as she is.. truly.. incredible!
Might I add that I think her "Story" is one of the most beautiful things I have ever read. And in no way could I ever do it justice, but I couldn't help but be inspired by it.. at first I wasn't quite sure where to take it.. but hopefully I took it in the right direction
P.S. I am sorry it is so long.. I had to keep writing to keep up with what I wanted to get in there.. the message ya know?

This is lovely - a true coming of age story with depth and feeling. The butterfly and the dove was a nice touch to a sad yet hopeful story.

A really good write. I think the structure worked really well for this poem. It's long, but I think if you had made it shorter it wouldn't have delivered the same impact. Overall, I think it was a lovely poem.
