learning from lori

today, I did not let the world bulge
in the pit of my stomach to fester

I allowed myself to float
ambivalent, carefree

I did not let every red light pull
at my rush to go nowhere
but, slowed

to witness a million souls pass

and at the punch clock this morning
with mary and mary
huddled around that which we knew

was inevitable

we shed our silent tears
thought of the two little boys
now motherless

and the fight of a woman
we could only stand back
and admire

.
