rich umbers burn the sunset,
catching colors from the swirl of leaves
that dart across the horizon,
tempting others still attached to trees
to follow
and they try, pulling at their jesses
in the terrible want to fly,
a temperamental dream, relying on wind
and the time till frost blankets the color to white,
pressing all to the ground
in stillness
still, these dreams of flight once touched,
once tamed, can hold the earth
through even the longest of winters;
taking the time spent frozen,
and blending it into one rich dawn
of orange
and delicate gold.
flame's bouquet
to last the bitter chill
