He doesn’t know how to build a trebuchet, I think,
Rotating the beam around a fixed axle is not right,
So I built a floating-arm treb and with it I did plink.
They fired too big a stone and broke their treb,
“The walls are too thick, we can’t knock them down!”
I went to the king’s court, bowing low as is the custom,
He sat, sneering, in purple robes; he looked like a clown.
He wouldn’t even meet my eyes. Arrogant fool!
I showed him my treb and offered to build a big one,
To my surprise, he agreed and ordered the lumber,
He needed much guidance until the job was done.
Now he calls it “his design.” His sycophants applaud,
As my treb smashes the enemy castle to the ground,
On payday I was given the wages of a common laborer,
No more than the shovelmen who built the mound.
So I diverted a river and flooded his army camp,
His knights slipped and fell on the muddy ground,
Their armor filled with water, they could not rise,
In an hour all the king’s heavy infantry had drowned.
Now I live in the forests, pursued all over the land,
They say that my inventions are the work of the devil,
It’s true that I construct booby traps for my pursuers,
But the designs are mine alone; my soul I did not sell.
They think anything they don’t understand is magic,
And, frankly, there’s a lot that they don’t understand,
I’m no magician; I’ve received no help from the devil,
All of my killing machines I built with my own hand.
I was driven to this life! I might’ve been benevolent,
And invented labor-saving devices to ease their load,
If only there had been a place for scientists in society,
But it wasn’t to be. Instead, my wrath they did goad.
To escape the king, I invented a time machine,
I was turned to steel in the great magnetic field,
Like Icarus, who flew too close to the sun,
I traveled to a neutron star; Ironman it did yield.
I am not a monster! I am a benevolent scientist!
I always wanted to improve the future of mankind,
But nobody wants me! Scientists get no respect,
So under my lead boots, their pathetic lives I grind.
Author notes
This poem was inspired by the Ozzy Osbourne song, Ironman. The illustration is by Hendrik Goltius. It shows Icarus, who constructed wings of feathers and wax to escape King Minos of Crete. He is falling because he flew too close to the sun and it melted the wax.
Ozzy's lyrics:
Has he lost his mind?
Can he see or is he blind?
Can he walk at all,
Or if he moves will he fall?
Is he alive or dead?
Has he thoughts within his head?
We’ll just pass him there
Why should we even care?
He was turned to steel
In the great magnetic field
Where he traveled time
For the future of mankind
Nobody wants him
He just stares at the world
Planning his vengeance
That he will soon unfold
Now the time is here
For iron man to spread fear
Vengeance from the grave
Kills the people he once saved
Nobody wants him
They just turn their heads
Nobody helps him
Now he has his revenge
Heavy boots of lead
Fills his victims full of dread
Running as fast as they can
Iron man lives again!

This one is definitely unique. I like how it is based off a sng that is obviously very meaningful to you. good allusions and word choices. Same with the rhyme from last poem.

Ironman is kind of my theme song.
Though now I feel ignorant because I never bothered to learn the story behind the song. Apparently it's a comic book or something. I'm going to look on the internet and find out about it.

Nice!!! This was well thought out and you seemed to have done your research on the subject. Even though (Ironman) was altered (by the electromagnet in his chest), he was not a monster in a real sense. Not sure if it fits in this contest. Having said that, I think this is a REALLY GREAT poem

Thanks for entering and good luck in the contest! -

I hope my poem will work for your contest.
I am an Ozzy fan and practically have the song memorized. However, I am not familiar with the back story. I actually made this story up from scratch.
Can you fill me in regarding the electromagnet on his chest or provide a link? Is Ironman a comic book hero? I don't read comics or watch TV, so I'm not very up on popular culture.

Thanks!
Ozzy is one of my favorites. Some of his songs are really deep if you listen closely to the lyrics.
