A Distant Rose

I almost breathed you in today
so close your fragrance lingered near
harsh winds blew every hint away
and welled a tear.

Oh I would fly as if a dove
and spend but one eternal day
to bask in gardens of your love
and sing your name.

You are my rose so wild and free
that climbs a wall I cannot touch
far distant thorns impale too deep
and hurt so much.

Expanse and time have blocked our route
merciless gulf no plea can fill
though storms have tossed our love about
I hunger still.

When longing can no more be born
and farewell falls from aching tongue
our life’s blood spent, long ages worn,
your love I’ve sung.

This was like a blast from the past. (Ouch. Cliche.) Very reminiscent in it's language of poetry of a bygone age. I thought the structure was fantastic, especially the much shorter 4th line of each stanza. That really gave it some power and made it stand out. I might give it a go myself one day, who knows...

This is a beautiful response to the prompt image, and a stunning ode to love. The yearning of the 3rd stanza is strong yet the words are simple. The form and content are a seamless whole. I liked this - congrats on the trophy.

Such beauty ... so deep and meaningful.. You have penned a most noble sapphic write... My words fail me as I try to write something ... The words of the poem took my breath away..

Oh I would fly as if a dove
and spend but one eternal day
to bask in gardens of your love
    and sing your name.

This verse is soooooo dreamy... I could ramble on about each and every verse.. but suffice it to say you have outdone yourself with this most emotional poem..
Good luck to you dear poet in the contest...
