Dragonfly Diaries: I Wonder If They Know...

There's my sister with her adolescent ill-concealed contempt
A brave sort of impatience that I haven't found my place
She read the symptoms out loud
from a middle school textbook
With none of her characteristic instinct
Only a vague and lucky guess that she allowed me to dismiss
without a confrontation or anything beyond a question
that I knew all too well how to answer

There's my father
who actually told me one too many times
that I'd have to lose weight
in order for any guy to find me attractive.
...and now is constantly wondering
did you eat
what did you eat
that isn't enough
eat something DO SOMETHING WITH YOUR LIFE
He certainly doesn't know.
Even if he knew, he wouldn't get it.
He's the smartest person I know...and he wouldn't get it.

There's my mother
my beautiful, straightforward, loving and endearing mother
who envies me
and never lets me forget it
especially when I make her "not feel like eating"
(because a 53-year-old should aspire to have the body of a 22-year-old)
who spends my father's money on tons of clothes I don't ask for
clothes she wishes she could wear
and insists I look good in everything
She must know
She MUST know
she's in denial

they MUST know

no.

they don't know.
