"Do You Realize How Serious This Is?"

If only
his words were taken seriously,
the Pan Am flight instructor in Egan,
"Do you realize how serious this is?"

If only
after three tries his words were heard
would they reach the officials who could act
thanks to Colleen Rowley, FBI, Minnesota.

If only
Rowley's requests for wire tap
and computer authorization
had not been refused by Washington.

If only
attempts in Arizona by Kenneth Williams to alert the FAA
about suspicions regarding lack of English skills
had merited alerts, not offers of coaching.

If only
the urgent information about well-funded students
wanting to learn to fly a 747, with no desire
to learn to takeoff or land, had been acted upon.

If only
those in authority listened to their agents,
followed the obvious links and inter-links
the smoke would not have bellowed.

If only
those in power to act had  listened to
"Do you know how serious this is?'
then families would still be intact.

If only
there could be a do-over
would we know how serious it was,
would the loved ones had come home that night.

If only
intelligence were interpreted by intelligence
not fueled by arrogance and a pre-determined desire
to wage an unwarranted war----if only....

Remembering

images not to be forgotten,

plumes of smoke bellowing,
the second plane circling,
crashing into the tower;
disbelief each hour,
till both towers fell,
a simulation of hell,

images not to be forgotten.

Remembering

every "If only"...

Author notes

Egan is located just outside Minneapolis.
Pilots must be proficient in English to be licensed;
the FAA rep who sat in on classes, instead of being
alarmed by the situation, offered tutoring to the
suspicious student.
One of the students who only wanted to learn to
fly the 747, despite obvious deficiencies of abilities
and had no desire to learn to takeoff or land was
Zacarias Moussaoui.

If is such a big word!

We do not always move with our eyes open. These things do sound really important now, but then we had not ever had something like this happen. I hope our eyes are open now, but history and what I see everyday says different. I feel the world is a "whats in it for me world." Everyone looks out for themselves(not everyone, but most) We need to help one another, instead of trying to be "better that the Jones's." Life is to learn what we need for the next life. Knowledge is all you take with you. So while it's nice to drive a "Lexis" we won't drive it in Heaven! God bless everyone and good luck in life! The Shaker

By the way, this is a great thought provoking piece you have written...Great job!

I am in tune with your commentary,
the theme of which has been playing
on the big screen of disclosure as
those at the top seem to take it all,
even while bringing down their company.

Re helping one another---I was so struck
with the visuals of the 350 day Saturday
I was compelled to assemble some of them
with words---a true helping one another
to save the world! A vast demonstration
      of helping and acknowledging!

great political poem of regret at the obvious that was not seen. love the verse:

I liked the rhythm of the ‘if only..’s. I do agree, much was overlooked and we do not know the whole underpinnings of it all. Your talent always shows in your work, my friend. --- I have additional thoughts on this:

If only, we had kept the feeling of unity in the immediate aftermath. Had listened to that early speech the president gave on uniting religious people and looking for common ground. If only we were not overcome by fear. This world would now be a different place. (The president lost his own vision and fell to the forces behind him, I think.)

There is a way out of every slip. There are always two scripts of reaction to choose from - one unites, one divides.

You always inspire thought and inspiration. - Bonita

Ah, Bonita, always wise words from you!

Yes, "the forces behind" led to a great divide,
serious mistakes that we must face now.
the opporunity was there, the greatest
      unitng opportunity---squandered.
And now the division deepens, based
      on misinterpretations, untruths. The problems
are so great that one would think that there
might be cooperation instead of the hatred spewed.

Up inn heaven, there may be a wish for a "do-over" button.

Thanks for sharing your well-expressed thoughts.

I felt obligated to give you a proper review so I am back... lol
when I read this the first two times and again this time as I read it I just didn't find it very poetic untilllll... the bottom and that is when it all comes together, somehow your adding that poem at the bottom makes the rest of it work and I really can't explain that in my mind, I have reread this and reread it and it just makes no sense to me, but it works only because you added that poem at the end, otherwise it would just be like a news article laid out in poetic format.

I guess that is what makes you the poet that you are, you are just so dang creative and it always shows. This contest has been delayed now for the longest time and I have to be honest, it has been primarily due to this piece, I have spent so much time pondering this piece that I have taken too long getting through the rest of them. Now please do not feel that it is your fault, for that is not the case, that is all on me dear. I just always want to do justice to all of my entrants and I needed to justify in my mind rather or not this was to go to the finalist or not. I have made my decision and this will go.

    Thank you for entering dear.

Oh, my dear, so sorry to cause you such stress.
I am more of a story teller, and had awoken that
day wanting to speak my piece for the 9/11
comemorative date. With only the title in my mind
I came upon your contest and let my rant fly free,
for your prompt was already in my mind. So, like
a reporter, I presented the case, all the reasons
the tragedy could have been averted, if only!

I am prone to political rants!!!!!

      Take care, dear Suzi!

I'm sorry my friend, I can tell by your writing style who wrote this and I know you are accustomed to me commenting, but I just can't... this one is just far too close to me.

Thank you for your entry dear and good luck

An incredible recap of our nations historical wake up call. Very well written. I remember when it happened as if it were yesterday. I also read and enjoyed your addendum. So true....If only we could go back knowing what we know today. Sometimes it takes a trgedy like this to open up the eyes of those powers that be that are slumbering in ease as well as the nations citizens. I imagine those that were involved in the bombing of Pearl Harbor feel similar.

Right, we all have those "if only" moments
but when it's as society changing as those
mentioned, intelligence must come into play.

And years later we see names and faces of
those who were so persistent in their efforts
      only to be shut down.

      Thanks, TD!

Since the culprits were of Saudi Arabian origin the consequent invasion of Iraq
Shock and Awe (terrorism at it's worse with weapons banned by international law)
resulted in the carnage in the London Underground and the consequent increase in "Terrorism" elsewhere. ...George.....

How well we know that, George.
If only the other George could
have been as wise as you!

On the day of the London tragedy,
we on another board had one member
from London, the rest mostly USA.
While she no longer was a daily
      corresponder, we thought much
of her. Laer in the day she checked in,
letting us know, that although that
very route was her usual way to work
she had decided to take a work-at-home
day and was safe and sound.

Sadly the events spurred others as you mention.

    An addendum...
    If only the Coast Guard
had given one common sense thought
to the implications when they held their
    "Training Excercise" this morning
    on the anniversary of 9/11
    near the Pentagon
on a secure area of the Potomoc
not to be entered by other craft,

    right between the bridges
    where moments before
    the President travelled
    returning from the Memorial event.

CNN scanners picked up the radio transmission
of the Coast Gusrd, "Bang, Bang, bang, bamg,"
which gave the impression this was a real event!

And the Coastguard spokesperson is blaming the Press!!!
    Another "If only..." moment!

And on a day so filled with memories...

    Well shared!

and for those of us that lived to remember ... I don't think we shall ever forget those images and the changes that were put into effect because of it! I know that I won't. There are always key indicators of 'something's not right' and yet it takes hindsight for 20/20 vision to occur. You have shared this well and the timing was right for posting it too! Remembering "if only"! Thanks, joy

Right, hindsight when there has been no foresight,
as witnessed today with the Coast Guard excercise
of encountering a supposed "suspicious" craft
conducted right in the area where the President's
      route passed on 9/11!

      Thanks for your insight, joy!

Such a well done thought filled timely piece, Aes.

It's mind boggling how many things were simply overlooked. I think people in general become easily complacent in many areas of life and work and simply think "it's not my job or responsibility".

Weather's supposed to be rough here tomorrow so I don't know if we'll be able to see the Ghost Lights.

      Oh, hope there's a break

Some of the mindset was attributed

We'll go to the bayshore beach either way. Just something we do. There's a sense of reverence that day on the pier...almost like a church.

Don't you love when that happens re: the concept and one spark is all it takes.

              Oh, such a long day!
              Good Mom!!!!

              My rebellion---sleeping in the day
when I advanced to the business world
              from teaching.

Principal used to stand with folded arms
near by art room off the commons, as the
              clock inched past 7:45. "It's my daughter's
              friend---she's always late" I explained,
for I drove them to school.

Of course I and my tribe would still be at
school until 6 at night, while eveyone else
              but the coaches had left!!

if only none of this ever happened the world would be a different place. One would hope that it was just plain ignorance that allowed these events to happen, but there is just too much space in between to allow the mind to wander.
God Bless all those taken that day and the families that were shattered.
This day always seems to sneak up on me and send a shiver down my spine.

Ah yes, tomorrow is 8 years. What a strange time that was for me, personally and of course for the country. Lots of red flags along the way and yet nothing ever seemed to get checked. There are days I almost want to jump in with the conspiracy theorists but then I just assume it was just ignorance.

Wow! That was fast--I just barely hit submit!!!

Strange, so many personal upheavals connected
with the event, even for those far removed from
the scene. The stockmarket was still trending down,
the internet funds tanking faster as reality set in.

Re the theorists, that caught Van Jones at the wrong time.
We are almost tempted to agree, but common sense
applied leads to ineptitide, the FBI dedicated to crimes
already committed, not to stopping suspected action.
      Lessons learned, hopefuly.
