"Journey to Self."

This girl, just a girl;
seemingly any face in the crowd.
Her smile to pass the time,
to appease the masses, the cold expectant eyes
Overlooked, under rated;
an emotional eruption as silent as the hollow beating heart.
Arise to the fallen,
to the corrupted American dream.
Chains collapse upon the single perceptive hope
Hold her close, everything will be okay.

Bleed out the tears of an externally imposed failure,
cleansed of the daily mundane.
She’s living this cyclical life
and questioning who’s really to be shamed..
Still trying to dance upon the right and wrong,
when it’s all one in the same.

Love’s dialect,
foreign and lost in translation
Where is her golden answer now?
To live up to the overbearing Man and Woman;
the foundation of her life
She’s burned by the impossibility
of achieving the image that they sought

A laceration of stress cuts the muscles used to stand,
so tormented by being...
who?
But when she picks herself back up,
finally
rising on her own two feet.

Author notes

Emily, this one is for you, not just your contest x:
We've never spoken at length but I was somewhat surprised at the list of things you said you're dealing with. It's weird how complete strangers can have a kindred likeness sometimes
I don't know your situation, but I encourage you to think everything through and to not make any quick decisions. Family is more than just blood; instead of choosing between both, would it be possible to have 2? Feelings are complicated and can be fragile, but you need to do what is best for YOU. As for school, college isn't for everyone-- one of the wealthiest men I know never took a single class beyond high school. On the other hand, having an education in today's age definitely makes things easier and leaves you with more opportunity. The good news is you can go to college at any age ^^
Well doll, good luck with everything. Keep ya head up!

    Congratulations...

    Congratulations on your Silver Trophy. It is well deserving. You have strong imagery and emotion in every piece and there was nothing cliche about it. Very original. You AN were very sweet and insightful as well. I am glad that we are here to reach out to a young girl in need.

    Thank you for writing this for me.
    I had to read it several times and then it finally hit me.
    I know that I dont have to choose but its like I really want to.
    Because not chosing makes me feel split.

      It's... not exactly saying that. It speaks of someone trying to live up to their "guardians" (parents/etc) expectations, to strive and aspire to be something if only to not disappoint them (externally imposed failure) and the immense struggles that follow. And then, to question the right and wrong-- which to choose? The people who raised you your whole life or those who merely gave you birth? Corrupted American dream... every suburban parent seems to want their child to fit a neat little mold; education, "good" friends, high paying job... but there's so much more to life. It's caging to think in such black and white terms. Everything is subjective and circumstantial though, thus why ultimately you will make the decision you feel is "right".
