I want to tour the US where the World once ran away
And carved a home from other people's lands.
A state where greed grows rampant and yet nature still holds sway,
A place no other nation understands.
There are prairies like an ocean and a desert like the moon,
I shall see them all then finish in a Wild West Saloon.
In Washington the White House (which we British set alight)
And New Orleans where Basin Street is blue.
I'd see Alaskan winters where at midday it's still night,
Montgomery where little Topsy grew.
There are prairies like an ocean and a desert like the moon,
I shall see them all then finish in a Wild West Saloon.
I want to see Savannah when the sun has turned it gold
And San Francisco's lights across the bay.
The wilds of Arizona where the Cavalry patrolled,
Manhattan where the world's sold every day.
There are prairies like an ocean and a desert like the moon,
I shall see them all then finish in a Wild West Saloon.
The alligatored Everglades, by airboat if I can,
Much farther south the beaches on the Keys.
Then Texas and the Alamo that once was Mexican
Chicago, that's the city with a breeze.
There are prairies like an ocean and a desert like the moon,
I shall see them all then finish in a Wild West Saloon.
The Rocky Mountains in the West, New England in the fall.
Death Valley where it's hot as any Hell.
The Colorado River with a canyon that's not small
And maybe I'll do Canada as well.
There are prairies like an ocean and a desert like the moon,
I shall see them all then finish in a Wild West Saloon.
I cannot list the half of it, there's Denver in the clouds
That's fairly near to Aspen where I'll ski.
There's wilderness and loneliness and cities full of crowds
And all of them are sights I want to see.
There are prairies like an ocean and a desert like the moon,
I shall see them all then finish in a Wild West Saloon.
So will you take me with you round the nation of your birth
And show me what it did to make you you?
Then come with me to England, that's the Jewel of the Earth
To show you round will make it seem brand new.
Where the Downs roll like an ocean and the mountains touch the Moon,
Then we'll settle to a pie and pint, the pub has a saloon!!!
Please tell me honestly what you think, good or bad.

When the lottery numbers come up ... one day perhaps!!!!!!
You should work for the Tourist Board Of America, I have no doubt you'd be an asset to them ... nice poem.

Boffo!
tempted to utter some arch comment about fitting Canada in between Manhattan and the Everglades but resisting
Great read, as always, Jeff.

OK John O' Gaunt! Sheesh!
(You know what I'm talking about - you're probably one of these people who call Andy Murray "British" until he loses!
)
Poem's okay.
