You’re like the lily that adorns my backyard:
a sunset in the dark of night, a glorious splash
of flaming-orange sky.
My flame lily appears when your birthday comes, in
mid September, a dry month in the Midwest, though
not as dry as it is in Zimbabwe when the Zambezi
slows down to a trickle and flaming-orange skies refuse
to hear spiritual supplications.
My lily grows solitary, clinging to other plants, scrambling
over them, reaching with its tendrils, as if it is looking for
its own reflection, or perhaps a companion, a hug-buddy.
Amakukhulume, some folks say, can cure minor
illnesses, get rid of pimples, kill ring worms;
others say that it can cure erectile dysfunction.
It is the national flower of Zimbabwe, on that we all agree,
but I want it to be my flower, too, for I found that it
can cure melancholy.

Even in your lovely writes you manage to fit in some 'erectile dysfunction'
Nice piece Mr. Vito, well deserving of the gold.
Love, love,
K

Congrats on the gold and thank s for a lovely write. I did not know that before but I know now. This was wonderful and showed much for this wonderful flower with its bright red charm that seems to have capotured your muse very much. Great rhythm and flow that pulled its reader right to the very end.

Oh yes, perfectly written indeed... another write with an adoring trophy that is worthy!

hehe.. erectile dysfunction

This is lovely and as vibrant as the flame lily from Zimbabwe. I had flame lilies in my garden once
. I could see this poem as I've been to Zimbabwe, that land of turmoil and natural beauty. Congrats on the gold, Vito - so very well-deserved. Of course this made my "african" heart smile too, just like Mariana's.

Beautiful hun, I am sure Missus M will love it

Don't hug it to tight, flowers are fragile, need a gentle hand.
Of course they do bloom again every year.
Lovely poem, Vito
