Dirge For Sanity

Plucking a dirge on my blackened harp,
fingers sliced from the serrated strings.
I listen to the voices, their tones almost as sharp,
as they whisper of the most godawful things.

I abandoned my morality and tossed remorse aside,
when I finally overcame my pitiful fears.
Now that I'm infected with a devilish sort of pride,
I take my pleasure as they bleed their tears.

Plucking a dirge for my long lost sanity,
for the remorse I threw out into the gutter.
Singing a song for my overwhelming vanity,
and thinking things not even sinful souls would utter.

Taking lives of children is just a game for me,
their pools of blood like glistening innocence lost.
The people think I'm crazy but I wish that they could see,
it's not neurosis, my heart's covered in frost.

I lost my empathy, my sympathy and my emotion,
except for my favorites, anger and rage.
If they knew what I was thinking, if the people took a notion,
they'd decide that I belong locked in a cage.

Plucking a dirge for my long lost sanity,
for the bodies that I pile in mass graves.
Singing a song welcoming insanity,
as I make the voices in my head my slaves.

What do you think?

I really enjoyed this!! I usually am not a big fan of anything that rhymes cuz it seems, to me, rather contrived? but I loved this so much!!
Really liked these lines: "I lost my empathy, my sympathy and my emotion,
except for my favorites, anger and rage."
They were probably my favourite out of the entire piece

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed, I mostly do free verse but I do sometimes break out in rhyme.
